< Back On the Side of the Road ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ /5 Stars. On the Side of the Road By Louis Romano and John Gojcaj. Life is hardly the result of a single choice. I expected more, but... One thing I know now of Mr. Louis Romano, after reading several of his works, is that the man has a knack for making you root for his main characters. No matter if they are innocent or swimming in sin . And to see, beyond the sometimes messy complications of their identities and lives, the bigger picture and what makes us human. This, some of the settings and the book being wrapped up in a satisfying way without any major plotholes are the positives that stayed with me the most. I was passed along this title, and I looked forward to seeing where the pages led. After finishing, I have very mixed feelings, but I can honestly say that the sentiment of my first statement remains. I believe I should say that I had no idea that the first chapters would feel so invasive and heartbreaking. This, I assumed, served two purposes. The first, shock value, and the second, likely to show readers the moment that would change the course of Maria and her son's lives (towards the stories end, I found that this thought had been on the right track). I wasn't as prepared as I would have liked to be for what I read, but I appreciated it for what it was. Dare I say, I found the first chapters to be some of the best of the entire story with one or two elsewhere being as engaging. Call this one the bittersweet side, not quite bad by itself, but worth mentioning. Unfortunately for me, for all the things I could guess, I did not foresee that many of the book's pages and content would be overshadowed by so much vulgarity and sexual happenings. I'm not much into the erotic, so I opted to focus more on how much these elements added to the story, if they were used effectively, and how likely others were to enjoy it who may often read that sort of material. Aside from some overexplained details that later prove to be mostly unnecessary, much of the dialogue and descriptions, sexual or otherwise, don't grasp any heartstrings. Some awkward word choice and dare I say cringe-inducing moments also exist in its pages. Scattered about here and there every few chapters. I'll not put sexually explicit details or such things here, but distasteful lines. Say, "Sofie gave the receptionist a contemptuous look and mumbled "b-tch" loud enough to be heard. She also said something in Spanish with the only decipherable word being "puta." As this was odd and redundant. Or, "He closed the door behind them, offering her a seat. He took a quick glance at her butt and legs and quickly pushed any natural male thoughts out of his mind." Regardless of it revolving around a daughter who was described as being the son her father never had to explain her less gentle nature, it felt the equivalent of an eye-roll 'only a man would write this' kind of time. Ironic, and a tad disappointing as I haven't had the displeasure of that thought in years. This story follows a noticeable pattern of Romano's work (as I have never read John Gojcaj's works before the current collaboration and cannot speak to it) with a heavy dose of mobsters, lavish lifestyles surrounded by crime and death, and The Bronx, NY. Be that as it may, I didn't feel pulled into that world even though I could picture the scenes. I also didn't feel as much for Tony or his difficulties after several time jumps. His literal, immediate shift about his life after his loss felt less convincing (somehow, I still wished for him to come out on top so kudos for that) later as well. It seemed as if Romano and his writing partner, Gojcaj, dismissed the time needed to allow that shift to happen in-line with their character's shock rather than suddenly being a changed man looking for escape. That isn't to say he seemed willing 100% of the time, but the execution fell short for me. Likewise, a lot of time was spent telling the audience about the money, privilege and exotics of Antonio's new lifestyle without focusing on making us care about it and feel like we were taking that ride, all its highs and lows, with him. This was not my prior experience. I don't know if it was just me, but I also saw most things coming from the start. And although that does sometimes happen, I was hoping to be in awe or at least very satisfied seeing everything unfold regardless of the mysteries up until the end of the book. Leo's sudden true thoughts being polar opposite to his professional demeanor was one of the only small surprises I can name. The only other shock on my part, also a negative, is that the description leads the audience to believe that the story would focus on the lives of the twins but one hardly makes an apperance or moves the story. This was even more strange as Maria, the mother of these twins, had been carrying secrets about her life and spends the rest of her days trying to make up for her decision concerning them through both devotion and God since the first chapter. I also didn't see mention/admittance of any AI use disclaimer, but it became impossible to ignore that it has been used. I can respect it more when it's told outright , but as I have now read other recent work by one of the two authors, I no longer have any doubts about its usage. I don't know if it's the writers themselves, the edit process or both, but I wouldn't have counted it as a negative had I been informed from the start and still chose to read it after. If I have somehow overlooked mention of it somewhere, then my apologies, but I was not going into this book thinking to find it. I hope, if yet another collaboration between these two come about as the acknowledgements suggest, that in the future these elements by which I felt less moved today will both improve and impress. Warning: Very adult, explicit and sexual scenes, death and suicide, strong language, rape and possible triggers inside this book.

< Back Echo of the King ⭐⭐⭐ A Tale of Candles ⭐⭐⭐/5 Stars. Echo of the King By T.C. Aucutt ...Sway it does. As my apparent luck would have it, I was able to read this book before its publishing and then its polished version afterward. It seems to be a slowly increasing event now and I always gain an even greater appreciation for an author's work because of it. Aucutt is no different in that regard. Still, it's the book itself that must sway me in one direction or the next. And well... sway it does. Take Blake's character, for example. His introduction, although with minor details to the audience, lacks the scenes and time to feel an attraction to his character. He plays more of a role as the story goes on, but it doesn't match the amount of care that went into introducing all the others in the previous installment. Rocky, Zack, Talune, Diemas, Jessica and Amy, etc. This never changed by the time the book hit the shelves. I wondered if it was supposed to introduce mystery, but in the end it only became a noticeable dip. It would have been nice if he wasn't tossed in a few sentences here and there and then made to simply exist as part of their entire journey. It made for less interest. And I was hoping the "reveal" surrounding him would not have been as obvious. Perhaps it is easier to guess excatly because of the difference in his introduction compared to most of the other characters? I still believe, however, that it was a nice touch to have a much less reactive character around even if the times he was carrying the weight of comedic relief were met with a dropped ball. Part of the reason essentially revolves around the mysterious reveal mentioned above (yep, no spoilers people), but it did make Jessica and Amy feel more tolerable while they traveled. Mainly as their reactions can seem more exaggerated throughout the story. Although, I personally felt there were not many surprises, at times unnecessary incidents and scenery feel overexplained (that, coming from a person who normally adores these details), there are yet again moments that the characters overlap in personality, inconsistencies with how time/their time limit affect character decisions and susequent events, Amy's unfortunate night through the swamp and swamp water feels like a bit "cheat and copy" of her being dragged under water and back again like with the first book, and the fact that the overall pacing still feels off to me, there were other things I could enjoy. Coronth and King Rovan were the most memorable of these even after another read through. It was a good idea to help the girls along and get them rested while setting up one of the main conflicts of the story, not to mention, introduce Princess Vaela. I expect her role to grow with the series. Revisiting a couple notable places from the first book, Talune's very creative use of the family pet (this one actually got a chuckle out of me) and the epilogue were also high on my list. That being the case, I also would not like to mislead any readers. I noticed it in the first book of The Tale of Candles series, but wanted to give the benefit of the doubt. This time, I am certain that the story was what I've now taken to call "AI-assisted" (written/created with considerable use of A.I). Unfortunately, there are areas that sound more mechanical and inorganic because of it, but there are still several layers, if you will, of human thought, effort and edits underneath. The fact that it is presented as otherwise, however, became a deciding factor in the lesser rating as well. Would I still read it knowing what I do now? Yes. If the author were honest about it . Even though I don't agree with the use of artificial intelligence beyond planning, research and advancing scientific technology, I'm not opposed to giving my opinion about stories in general. That would include an occasional AI-assisted story, too. Of course, that does not mean it would be my preference nor my go-to, but much more than that dictates my thoughts/rating on another's work. I remain, despite the nature of its creation and what other lingering thoughts I have about what else doesn't add much to the story, with questions. Questions concerning Amy, her friends, their struggles, and which details (obvious or otherwise) will create the next book in the series. Which in itself, means that the story accomplished some of Aucutt's goals regardless...

< Back The Bad Weather Friend ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐. 5 /5 Stars. The Bad Weather Friend By Dean Koontz The enemy of my enemy is my friend. I hoped to be gripped, perhaps even boxed in. At the beginning of the story I wasn't sure how I would feel. It took a while to be swayed by Benjamin and the other characters, although the visualization was there. As were my moments of curiosity. Still, I found myself taken away from the book many times by speech that made less of some characters, a story that took more than it gave, and confliction with character portrayals. For example, I found some happenings and people awkwardly described. To the point that it felt Koontz may have been telling the audience about things he didn't know very well or decided to randomly add to the story hoping for a different result. There was also a point that I felt Benjamin's lifestyle and his supposed level of maturity were sewing discord with his more childish words and behavior several times within the story. Wherein, I'd easily forgotten he was a 23 year old man given the near constant emphasis on his lack of anger, success in retail to the point of living wealthy within 3 years, etc. and then he would blurt out opposing and childish sentences or suddenly lose all the maturity built up in the rest of the book. These times felt wildly different and almost unrealistic to me (normally it is easily forgiven and forgotten as this is a work of fiction) in a way that was just too much opposition to the realism of its settings, characters and positions they are wrapped up in for a large portion of the book. They did not disappear but, when I settled back into reading it a number of attempts later, I had a slightly better experience going forward. While other things were left to be desired, and the references were a bit too abundant for my tastes, I enjoyed some of the brief comedic moments. More specifically, there were nice one-liners and jabs most of us {readers} could chuckle at. My favorite aspects of this story were the little winks to a character being more than they appeared--which could be said to some degree for much of the supporting characters--and the messages about friendship and life sprinkled throughout it. For me, this book really 'came alive' within the chapter called "The Monster" and leveled out into a semi-intriguing story for some time thereafter. Unfortunately, I did not feel the story in its entirety was as enjoyable as certain moments. I had hoped to be gripped, perhaps even boxed in like the mysterious package to Mr. Benjamin Catspaw's doorstep. I did, however, leave the work with some memorable quotes. I've provided two of them below. Two impactful quotes: "Many of your friends will be fair-weather friends, Benjamin, but I will be there in bad weather, in worse weather, in any weather." "The world desperately needs nice, sane people."

< Back Spares ⭐⭐⭐.5 ⭐⭐⭐. 5 /5 Stars. Spares By Michael Marshall Smith Creative technology but a cracked chip? A solid 3.5 stars for me--hit and miss. I liked that Jack wasn't made out to be a perfect character. He didn't claim such, and he often reflected on his past and actions. He knew when he had been terrible. The self-accountability goes a ways, but by the same token, he wasn't very redeemable..? Even by the end of the book, that seemed to fall flat for me. Even after knowing what he did to the monster in "The Gap". At least he was witty. I don't really like sci-fi, but I found the tech a pretty creative aspect of the book and the some of what I enjoyed the most (the opposite of my norm for this genre) . My favorite parts of the book dealt with the curiously motivated robots & microchips (Rachet), talking refrigerators, sassy computer program interfaces / "versonalities" and the use of certain characters like Vinaldi. The writing style is hit and miss. And some backstory seems misplaced. Especially as it concerns "The Gap." Their experiences lose some of their meaning with the excessive use of drugs (mentioned below), unneccessary terminology, and paragraphs dotted along the book that gives the reader information, half of which lead to a dead end. Not to mention that it seems like it was supposed to offer a sense of intrigue and chaos. Only, it never totally got there. Though I can't say the writing didn't add to the chaotic side of things. As a reader, you can get lost in sudden vagueness amongst the crazy and end up understanding even less than before. The romance between Nearly and Jack was, in my opinion, underdeveloped and not really necessary ? Nearly, for her experiences in the shady bits of life, also seemed fairly immature and child-like at the oddest times. It made more sense for them to have a platonic relationship, but I can't say that I am particularly annoyed by what became of them. Other aspects of the story, particularly concerning the spares, could have been more centered. It sometimes felt overshadowed by other aspects of Jack's life or events outside of them. Which in itself felt a bit weird given that the title is based on their existence and the overlap to Jack in the first place. Also, for most of the book, the spares themselves aren't really present in any real capacity. Learning about the Farm you start to care, but it stops short. Now onto the afforementioned drugs. The Rapt drugs taking over so much of the story was a bit distasteful for my liking. I felt like it only added to the story for certain aspects of the plot and ruined others. It made sense as a harmful aspect of the dystopian, rough society, as well as soldiers coping through their sufferings, but it often buried entire pages of the book to the point of taking me out of the story. Also, even if Jack had a past with it, functioning to the point of completing almost anything with such insanely strong hallucinations and altered brain chemicals, especially those capable of driving men to lose reality , seemed much less likely. Even more that the story could progress in spite of it without going horrendously wrong. It is sci-fi, a tale of fiction, but it definitely took away from the overall experience for me.

< Back Fae or Foe ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Cracklock Saga ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 Stars. Fae or Foe? By C.A Deegan A true moment of not judging a book by its cover. This story plays all the right mindgames with the audience! True to its name, the story will make you wonder which of its intriguing characters truly have alterior motives or pose no harm. Particularly in its beginning. There were many things that changing perspectives accomplished very well, for example, a good deal of foreshadowing and explanations. It was also nice to have a peek into the other characters' minds. Personally, I think it was a great choice for their tale. Speaking of characters, I thoroughly enjoyed the part Jack played in the story. The moment he stood up to the LeFey twins, the blossoming of friendship between him and Jimmy (who I found myself particularly fond of), and the narrow escape(s) to freedom from a moment of good intentions. He's a good boy. Aunt Elsie, though a quite boisterous woman, was a lovely addition to the story. I immediately surmised that she likely held a pivotal role in the mysteries Jack was trying to solve. I always adore characters that are more than they appear, and I found Elsie to be all that and more. She has a wonderful personality and a lovely spirit. I also loved how caring and passionate Dorcas was. She is both sweet and feisty in the best of ways. Although. I must also say I was thoroughly relieved to see more personality come out of her. I especially worried, given the mismatched patterns of her accent and the vague connections of a house slave that constantly resurfaced in my mind (albeit she lacks any such force or confinement). Likely, it is unintentional, though not altogether negative even if it had been otherwise, but her descriptions also align with this thought. So, compounded, these gave me pause and made reading the story take a bit longer when her character came into any scene for me. However, it doesn't take away from her. Most of all, I loved that Dorcas lived up to her reputation and was not written off as a useless character. So, there it is. And here I am, invested and interested to see how events will unfold throughout the series. I found the power dynamic to be a bit odd, the switch at the end leading into part of what we as the audience can reasonable assume to be a/the focus of the next book a little awkward, and the meshing of Jack and Jimmy's personalities towards the end of the book unexpected but any small qualms were just that. To me, they don't warrant taking off any stars. I hope that each character will continue to be as memorable moving forward.

We also are introduced to numerous new characters which mo ve the story along. It is easy to see ourselves in the characters. This book will answer many questions raised in book one and will leave you with man y new question{s} . The dynamics, complexities of each character shows just how much thought and consideration the author put into making them come alive. BONUS COMMENT I LOVE ossetts. ~THolmes.
