  • Fur | ADMCreations LLC

< Back Fur ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 Stars. Fur By Katherine Black An different kind of adventure. It deserves every star!! I started to read Fur by Katherine Black on Easter (an ironic happening you'd recognize if you read it) and finished within 24 hours. It deserves every single star! I was pleased by realistic feelings, thoughts, and actions. Both by Sammy, who sheds a lot of truth on autism as a whole, and his mother, Shelly. Of course, there's an entire cast of characters that add to these elements, so I must take the time to at least mention them in passing. As for John , I disliked him from the first interaction and that feeling intensified with the unbalanced burdens placed on Shelly's shoulders at any given moment. However , this is not a negative for his character as written. He accomplishes everything his role requires in the story. As a character that I'm sure many would "love to hate" to some degree. And I begrudgingly accepted his changes until they felt natural, some part of me glad for anything redeemable . Each one of them, not simply John, are riddled with reasons and opportunities to make you feel a slew of emotions. Like the ache left behind for Maura after her lost shifted the balance in her world. Despite the moments where I felt some frustration with Shelly's personality, I simultaneously understood her without lingering negative feelings, so that was a surprise. On the note of surprises ... there was something in particular that warmed me constantly from the beginning. As someone who is *not* on the spectrum but wholeheartedly benefits from the work and company of my service dog and is disabled, I was moved by the family's bond with Carthenage. As well as the love of animals, pets, and a small support circle, to a community at large that was showcased altogether. One of my favorite parts of the book was when Sammy rode the train alone , faced with several cruel teenagers, and in his own way, held his own. This was a time of heavy anxiety for him and me , both. Yet, it is absolutely beautiful and necessary . It showed his love , determination , and the possibility that Sammy might not be nearly as helpless as suggested. That he had a different kind of strength awakening in him. Luckily, Black doesn’t allow it to become meaningless by the end. I teared up by the time Sammy expressed himself more subjectively. I enjoyed the story very much, and without my migraine as an obstacle, finished it quickly. It was a well-written and engaging book, worth the read. I'll be giving some of her other works a chance going forward!

  • Spares | ADMCreations LLC

< Back Spares ⭐⭐⭐.5 ⭐⭐⭐. 5 /5 Stars. Spares By Michael Marshall Smith Creative technology but a cracked chip? A solid 3.5 stars for me--hit and miss. I liked that Jack wasn't made out to be a perfect character. He didn't claim such, and he often reflected on his past and actions. He knew when he had been terrible. The self-accountability goes a ways, but by the same token, he wasn't very redeemable..? Even by the end of the book, that seemed to fall flat for me. Even after knowing what he did to the monster in "The Gap". At least he was witty. I don't really like sci-fi, but I found the tech a pretty creative aspect of the book and the some of what I enjoyed the most (the opposite of my norm for this genre) . My favorite parts of the book dealt with the curiously motivated robots & microchips (Rachet), talking refrigerators, sassy computer program interfaces / "versonalities" and the use of certain characters like Vinaldi. The writing style is hit and miss. And some backstory seems misplaced. Especially as it concerns "The Gap." Their experiences lose some of their meaning with the excessive use of drugs (mentioned below), unneccessary terminology, and paragraphs dotted along the book that gives the reader information, half of which lead to a dead end. Not to mention that it seems like it was supposed to offer a sense of intrigue and chaos. Only, it never totally got there. Though I can't say the writing didn't add to the chaotic side of things. As a reader, you can get lost in sudden vagueness amongst the crazy and end up understanding even less than before. The romance between Nearly and Jack was, in my opinion, underdeveloped and not really necessary ? Nearly, for her experiences in the shady bits of life, also seemed fairly immature and child-like at the oddest times. It made more sense for them to have a platonic relationship, but I can't say that I am particularly annoyed by what became of them. Other aspects of the story, particularly concerning the spares, could have been more centered. It sometimes felt overshadowed by other aspects of Jack's life or events outside of them. Which in itself felt a bit weird given that the title is based on their existence and the overlap to Jack in the first place. Also, for most of the book, the spares themselves aren't really present in any real capacity. Learning about the Farm you start to care, but it stops short. Now onto the afforementioned drugs. The Rapt drugs taking over so much of the story was a bit distasteful for my liking. I felt like it only added to the story for certain aspects of the plot and ruined others. It made sense as a harmful aspect of the dystopian, rough society, as well as soldiers coping through their sufferings, but it often buried entire pages of the book to the point of taking me out of the story. Also, even if Jack had a past with it, functioning to the point of completing almost anything with such insanely strong hallucinations and altered brain chemicals, especially those capable of driving men to lose reality , seemed much less likely. Even more that the story could progress in spite of it without going horrendously wrong. It is sci-fi, a tale of fiction, but it definitely took away from the overall experience for me.

  • Vehemence | ADMCreations LLC

< Back Vehemence ⭐⭐.5 Tree of Treason ⭐⭐. 5 /5 Stars. Vehemence By William Thomas Brumley A Spy tale that doesn't tell? A short spy story. I don't have a lot to say about it. From the beginning, interest in the story and its protagonist rises and falls. Tella, the story's main character, seems to be clashing with the persona that the story itself aludes her to be. In such a way that I found her behavior and personality do not live up to her reputation as a top spy with lots of experience under her belt. While the main objective seems to be to get the audience to feel closer to her while showing her struggle in a vulnerable situation from the onset, I found myself looking for more reason to actually be attached to her character. Sometimes her actions, like cutting her hair at the beginning of the story for example, also seems awkward and misplaced? As if it was introduced to the audience as being significant, but gave no opportunity to build up to that. It was a pattern that repeated itself several other times in the book. While some errors are pretty easily overlooked, the writing itself doesn't flow very well because of sentence structure and choppy descriptions or repetitiveness. Sometimes, even obvious redundancies. The other characters as a whole are interesting but also lack enough character building to make strong impacts. While I could see how they intersect and what the author may have been going for, they didn't leave much of a mark on me either. Their potential was there, it was just not executed well enough to be monumental. The romance was also lacking and felt awkward. The best thing about the story, in my opinion, is the action. Although I wouldn't call it perfect, Brumley has an eye for the kind of action that moves a spy tale along. Enough that some of those moments overshadow the rest. Final thoughts: Balance is key. For a short story, it would have been nice if it had been more of a seamless reading experience. With a bit more work and editing, this could be much more enjoyable. Action is the strongest factor in the story and everything else took a back seat to it. This has to change to make the story great.

  • LP2T CHARACTERS | ADMCreations LLC

⭐LP2T Characters⭐ ⭐LP2T Characters⭐ ⭐LP2T Characters⭐ ⭐LP2T Characters⭐ Yura, once raised under G.H.L, still retains most of her caring nature despite the confusion, and even bitterness, she feels. All of which, keep thoughts of revenge constantly floating back to the surface of her mind these days. Thanks to a stormy night a little under 10 years ago (BD), she now knows she can use strange power she did not have before. Unfortunately, she lacks both experience and proper technique to fully utilize them. Worse, she knows almost nothing of them. It has been a year since she began to help civilians--those she calls "Innocents," and began her face-offs with Enforcers--footmen of G.H.L that she considers "puppets" of the organization (knowing or unknowingly). Although they are now her enemies, she feels conflicted confronting them given her views from the past. Her good deeds have since earned her many nicknames. Of which, "The Blue Guardian" has become the most popular. Its influence spreads despite the fact she, her motives, and her identity remain a secret. Yura seeks answers to events of the past, while trying to understand a world she no longer recognizes around her. A bit reserved but heavily determined, the one thing she does know is that she will never feel free if the puzzle goes unsolved. And well, if she disrupts the current, cruel system of society while she does it, then good riddens. An only-child, raised by her grandfather Sami after the death of her mother, Vinnie is an ambitious and intelligent pre-teen whose goals in life consists of three things; create a line as impressive as her late mother's work, hold her grandfather to his every promise, and live until old age. They may not seem like much to an outsider, but the manifestation of these goals came about from her bittersweet first years of life. Sometimes stubborn and often heard shouting from across the room, it is almost hard to believe that she was once a very quiet and docile child. She wonders what her life would be like if she hadn't decided to change, but those thoughts are as good as useless and better left behind. Having also found that being who she is today garnered many positive results, she only hopes that her temperament will even out in time. Easily embarrassed and more sensitive than she seems, she does everything she can to avoid being vulnerable in front of others. Despite this habit, her grandfather and Yura both have a way of bringing about her softer side when they are near. Nearly oblivious of her actions when she becomes overly passionate, their accepting natures may add fuel to the fire. Vinnie has always been grateful. Most notably, for her small family and the fact that she has never had to worry about money while others fight to survive without it. Especially as material for her inventions tend to have a high price tag (she sometimes scavanges for these among other reasons) and has openly shared finances with Yura since she came into their lives. As one method of payback for Enforcers improperly using her mother's works against the people, Vinnie destroys them at every opportunity and builds opposing gadgets. Occassionally, even selling them to rebels in anonymity. Her favorite invention so far: A skimming device that she calls "The Interceptor". It scans broadcasts and digitally processed information on private networks (almost certainly in use by Enforcers and a few powerful individuals). Usually hours before it becomes public knowledge. She used scraps from her mother's last projects to finish it. Sami is a kind and devoted grandfather who adores Vinnie to no end. Likewise, he has come to view Yura as part of the family and cherishes her just as much as what she has done for their healing since he found her. He spends the majority of his days having tea -what is now to the point of dependency- to de-stress and reminisce, but he was once a very sought-after woodworker from a historic line of them in his younger days. Now, he rarely takes on new tasks outside of the home. In part, because he no longer has the need for funds but mostly because he prefers to be with Vinnie as much as possible. He is one of a few left of his generation that clearly recall growing up in the world before. As half of his life was spent carefree with his childhood friends and their families, he only occassionally found himself hard at work. Today, many of his family's furniture and projects can be found across most cities just like that of his friends. He wishes nearly every day that Vinnie, Yura and all the current youth were able to experience life the way it was before those difficult years leading up to The Horror and every wave that washed over their lands after. It seems he will never truly escape the ever-growing ache to return to earlier days, which is heavily influenced by the loss of his wife Vita and their daughter (Vinnie's mother) Sina. Ashamed of his behavior after their deaths and the resulting changes in Vinnie because of it, he vowed never to be carried off by that depression again, among other things. He's also invested much self-control, time, and attention to keeping the deathbed promise he swore to Sina about Vinnie's identity given a previous affiliation with G.H.L. It seemed difficult before, but things are further complicated now that they've come to understand Yura has a personal connection to them as well. Sami has always been an easy-going and calm person. Though his playful and daydreamy nature makes him seem a bit high in the clouds, he is very grounded in reality and detail-oriented. A little-known fact about Sami: When his wife began to fall ill, he asked her to teach him how to make clothes (Vita's family were esteemed seamstresses). He honed his skills and has since sewn most of the family's everyday wear, tailored to their styles. He is disappointed that there's no way to continue this for Yura as she travels.
