- Howl of the Wolf | ADMCreations LLC
< Back Howl of the Wolf ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Tale of Candles ⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5 Stars. Howl of the Wolf ByT.C. Aucutt The Howl is only the Start of the Call. The best thing about first impressions, however, is the ability to overcome them with time. I had a little more than a first look into this story before it was available to the public, and now, after re-reading the finished product, I've returned to review it. Aside from my general appreciation for improvement and hard work, I simply enjoy the imagination that indie authors bring about. These feelings were still with me after reading this book, which is already a plus. That being said, I did find a certain distaste for both Amy's best friend Jessica, and her brother, Zack, at the start. Mostly, as their attitudes were not to my liking (if a goal of the author then it is a job well done), and their inconsiderate behavior and words despite supposedly being close to the protagonist. The best thing about first impressions , however, is the ability to overcome them with time. And, I would say that they grow in character and behavior throughout the story. Albeit, by different measures. If not at least for this, added to their feats within the first book of this series, the two of them deserve praise. Besides redundancies, more towards the beginning of the work than the rest, I also thought that there were a few times of exaggeration where the characters don't quite fit their personalities, or other times, mirror their previously-made decisions , but it was not enough to ruin an entire experience. No matter my short list of qualms, there are many things Aucutt does well that earned these stars. The foreshadow work was a favorite, especially as I pay a lot of attention to small details. And seeing them come back into play during tension or to close out a plot hole, yet still leaving something for readers to anticipate in the series, was thoughtfully done. The semi-mysterious layers that is "The Candles" and how they're woven into the story's history, even playing a large role in who Talune has become long before he assists Amy and her family (it seems that more of that is being bricked-in for later books), was something I thought other readers would also like as much as I did. In addition to these, the action and visuals help bind everything together. Even if not perfect, it is no easy task. By its end, I remained curious about how Amy would be able to face what has happened, how she might return to fix (assuming it is possible) what has been done, and what kind of person she and her friends and family would become. Will she come into a new power or would someone else dare to escape and shift their odds? I think I'll stick around to find out.
- Spares | ADMCreations LLC
< Back Spares ⭐⭐⭐.5 ⭐⭐⭐. 5 /5 Stars. Spares By Michael Marshall Smith Creative technology but a cracked chip? A solid 3.5 stars for me--hit and miss. I liked that Jack wasn't made out to be a perfect character. He didn't claim such, and he often reflected on his past and actions. He knew when he had been terrible. The self-accountability goes a ways, but by the same token, he wasn't very redeemable..? Even by the end of the book, that seemed to fall flat for me. Even after knowing what he did to the monster in "The Gap". At least he was witty. I don't really like sci-fi, but I found the tech a pretty creative aspect of the book and the some of what I enjoyed the most (the opposite of my norm for this genre) . My favorite parts of the book dealt with the curiously motivated robots & microchips (Rachet), talking refrigerators, sassy computer program interfaces / "versonalities" and the use of certain characters like Vinaldi. The writing style is hit and miss. And some backstory seems misplaced. Especially as it concerns "The Gap." Their experiences lose some of their meaning with the excessive use of drugs (mentioned below), unneccessary terminology, and paragraphs dotted along the book that gives the reader information, half of which lead to a dead end. Not to mention that it seems like it was supposed to offer a sense of intrigue and chaos. Only, it never totally got there. Though I can't say the writing didn't add to the chaotic side of things. As a reader, you can get lost in sudden vagueness amongst the crazy and end up understanding even less than before. The romance between Nearly and Jack was, in my opinion, underdeveloped and not really necessary ? Nearly, for her experiences in the shady bits of life, also seemed fairly immature and child-like at the oddest times. It made more sense for them to have a platonic relationship, but I can't say that I am particularly annoyed by what became of them. Other aspects of the story, particularly concerning the spares, could have been more centered. It sometimes felt overshadowed by other aspects of Jack's life or events outside of them. Which in itself felt a bit weird given that the title is based on their existence and the overlap to Jack in the first place. Also, for most of the book, the spares themselves aren't really present in any real capacity. Learning about the Farm you start to care, but it stops short. Now onto the afforementioned drugs. The Rapt drugs taking over so much of the story was a bit distasteful for my liking. I felt like it only added to the story for certain aspects of the plot and ruined others. It made sense as a harmful aspect of the dystopian, rough society, as well as soldiers coping through their sufferings, but it often buried entire pages of the book to the point of taking me out of the story. Also, even if Jack had a past with it, functioning to the point of completing almost anything with such insanely strong hallucinations and altered brain chemicals, especially those capable of driving men to lose reality , seemed much less likely. Even more that the story could progress in spite of it without going horrendously wrong. It is sci-fi, a tale of fiction, but it definitely took away from the overall experience for me.
- The Bad Weather Friend | ADMCreations LLC
< Back The Bad Weather Friend ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐. 5 /5 Stars. The Bad Weather Friend By Dean Koontz The enemy of my enemy is my friend. I hoped to be gripped, perhaps even boxed in. At the beginning of the story I wasn't sure how I would feel. It took a while to be swayed by Benjamin and the other characters, although the visualization was there. As were my moments of curiosity. Still, I found myself taken away from the book many times by speech that made less of some characters, a story that took more than it gave, and confliction with character portrayals. For example, I found some happenings and people awkwardly described. To the point that it felt Koontz may have been telling the audience about things he didn't know very well or decided to randomly add to the story hoping for a different result. There was also a point that I felt Benjamin's lifestyle and his supposed level of maturity were sewing discord with his more childish words and behavior several times within the story. Wherein, I'd easily forgotten he was a 23 year old man given the near constant emphasis on his lack of anger, success in retail to the point of living wealthy within 3 years, etc. and then he would blurt out opposing and childish sentences or suddenly lose all the maturity built up in the rest of the book. These times felt wildly different and almost unrealistic to me (normally it is easily forgiven and forgotten as this is a work of fiction) in a way that was just too much opposition to the realism of its settings, characters and positions they are wrapped up in for a large portion of the book. They did not disappear but, when I settled back into reading it a number of attempts later, I had a slightly better experience going forward. While other things were left to be desired, and the references were a bit too abundant for my tastes, I enjoyed some of the brief comedic moments. More specifically, there were nice one-liners and jabs most of us {readers} could chuckle at. My favorite aspects of this story were the little winks to a character being more than they appeared--which could be said to some degree for much of the supporting characters--and the messages about friendship and life sprinkled throughout it. For me, this book really 'came alive' within the chapter called "The Monster" and leveled out into a semi-intriguing story for some time thereafter. Unfortunately, I did not feel the story in its entirety was as enjoyable as certain moments. I had hoped to be gripped, perhaps even boxed in like the mysterious package to Mr. Benjamin Catspaw's doorstep. I did, however, leave the work with some memorable quotes. I've provided two of them below. Two impactful quotes: "Many of your friends will be fair-weather friends, Benjamin, but I will be there in bad weather, in worse weather, in any weather." "The world desperately needs nice, sane people."
- Fur | ADMCreations LLC
< Back Fur ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 Stars. Fur By Katherine Black An different kind of adventure. It deserves every star!! I started to read Fur by Katherine Black on Easter (an ironic happening you'd recognize if you read it) and finished within 24 hours. It deserves every single star! I was pleased by realistic feelings, thoughts, and actions. Both by Sammy, who sheds a lot of truth on autism as a whole, and his mother, Shelly. Of course, there's an entire cast of characters that add to these elements, so I must take the time to at least mention them in passing. As for John , I disliked him from the first interaction and that feeling intensified with the unbalanced burdens placed on Shelly's shoulders at any given moment. However , this is not a negative for his character as written. He accomplishes everything his role requires in the story. As a character that I'm sure many would "love to hate" to some degree. And I begrudgingly accepted his changes until they felt natural, some part of me glad for anything redeemable . Each one of them, not simply John, are riddled with reasons and opportunities to make you feel a slew of emotions. Like the ache left behind for Maura after her lost shifted the balance in her world. Despite the moments where I felt some frustration with Shelly's personality, I simultaneously understood her without lingering negative feelings, so that was a surprise. On the note of surprises ... there was something in particular that warmed me constantly from the beginning. As someone who is *not* on the spectrum but wholeheartedly benefits from the work and company of my service dog and is disabled, I was moved by the family's bond with Carthenage. As well as the love of animals, pets, and a small support circle, to a community at large that was showcased altogether. One of my favorite parts of the book was when Sammy rode the train alone , faced with several cruel teenagers, and in his own way, held his own. This was a time of heavy anxiety for him and me , both. Yet, it is absolutely beautiful and necessary . It showed his love , determination , and the possibility that Sammy might not be nearly as helpless as suggested. That he had a different kind of strength awakening in him. Luckily, Black doesn’t allow it to become meaningless by the end. I teared up by the time Sammy expressed himself more subjectively. I enjoyed the story very much, and without my migraine as an obstacle, finished it quickly. It was a well-written and engaging book, worth the read. I'll be giving some of her other works a chance going forward!
- Vehemence | ADMCreations LLC
< Back Vehemence ⭐⭐.5 Tree of Treason ⭐⭐. 5 /5 Stars. Vehemence By William Thomas Brumley A Spy tale that doesn't tell? A short spy story. I don't have a lot to say about it. From the beginning, interest in the story and its protagonist rises and falls. Tella, the story's main character, seems to be clashing with the persona that the story itself aludes her to be. In such a way that I found her behavior and personality do not live up to her reputation as a top spy with lots of experience under her belt. While the main objective seems to be to get the audience to feel closer to her while showing her struggle in a vulnerable situation from the onset, I found myself looking for more reason to actually be attached to her character. Sometimes her actions, like cutting her hair at the beginning of the story for example, also seems awkward and misplaced? As if it was introduced to the audience as being significant, but gave no opportunity to build up to that. It was a pattern that repeated itself several other times in the book. While some errors are pretty easily overlooked, the writing itself doesn't flow very well because of sentence structure and choppy descriptions or repetitiveness. Sometimes, even obvious redundancies. The other characters as a whole are interesting but also lack enough character building to make strong impacts. While I could see how they intersect and what the author may have been going for, they didn't leave much of a mark on me either. Their potential was there, it was just not executed well enough to be monumental. The romance was also lacking and felt awkward. The best thing about the story, in my opinion, is the action. Although I wouldn't call it perfect, Brumley has an eye for the kind of action that moves a spy tale along. Enough that some of those moments overshadow the rest. Final thoughts: Balance is key. For a short story, it would have been nice if it had been more of a seamless reading experience. With a bit more work and editing, this could be much more enjoyable. Action is the strongest factor in the story and everything else took a back seat to it. This has to change to make the story great.
